ten years ago, katie's beloved grandfather, peter john "pj" stappers, passed away from pancreatic cancer.  he was an incredibly important figure in her life and it was heartbreaking to watch him battle this difficult disease.

pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in the world and thousands of americans are diagnosed every year. most patients receive a poor prognosis: the one-year survival rate is 20% and the five-year survival rate is a discouraging 4%. support for research and awareness about the disease is incredibly important. the Lustgarten Foundation, with a mission “to advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer”, does inspiring work for the cause and has made a significant impact.

in honor of her grandfather, katie designed the pj necklace. the pj necklace pairs faceted onyx gemstones with velvet ribbon in purple, the color that represents pancreatic cancer awareness. 100% of the profits from the pj necklace will go to the Lustgarten Foundation.
